Join US PROStitutes Collective, Legal Action for Women and friends for two events on May 22:
On Polk Street and elsewhere, sex workers, many of whom have been driven into sex work by homelessness, poverty and destitution, are being repeatedly ticketed and arrested for loitering/nuisance charges. Sit/Lie tickets start at $50 and can be increased to $500 and jail time. Under existing MPCs (Municipal Police Codes) people are getting 6, 10, 12 charges. These are brought together to be prosecuted as a strategy to get guilty convictions from SF juries who have been sympathetic with sex workers. No evidence is needed, no tapes, no photos, just the word of a cop.
Sex workers, the majority of whom are mothers, young and/or transgender/LBGTQ, are being forced out onto the streets by crackdowns against web advertising like Craigslist. Rape and violence are increasing but who will go to the police to report knowing you risk arrest under these laws. How long before we see more serial murders like those in Long Island and Los Angeles.
11am-1pm Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro at QUEEN’s (Queers for Economic Equality Now) event for Harvey Milk’s birthday
1pm march to Harvey’s old camera store. US PROS will be there at noon.
