Participatory Budgeting - from budget cuts to a people's budget

Date:
Wednesday, April 27, 2011
Time:
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Event Type:
Panel Discussion
Organizer/Author:
Marc Mascarenhas-Swan
Location Details:
UC Berkeley Campus,
Wurster Hall,
Room 112, 1st floor

Join JASEcon, Center for Global Metropolitan Studies and other community-based organizations for a discussion of Participatory Budgeting and how it could be applied in SF Bay Area with Josh Lerner and Alderman Joe Moore.

PB can facilitate more inclusive decisions about budget appropriations and cuts, with emphasis on directly including the voices of people of color and the poor who are often underserved by budgets. It can draw on the wisdom and creativity of local people to help solve their own problems and create more local, living wage employment (like worker coops), as well as more accountability and transparency.

Joining us will be international PB expert and founder of the Participatory Budgeting Project, Josh Lerner, and Council member Joe Moore, who successfully implemented PB in a multicultural district of Chicago.
