Can We Get a Midnight Matt Dodt Full Report, Please?

by Craig Louis Stehr (craigstehr [at] hushmail.com)
Please post the full report following Midnight Matt Dodt's court appearance. Thank you.
Last night following my evening meditation at Berkeley's Vedanta Society, I mindfully crossed Bowditch and walked along People's Park. Gene, the night watch person for the Tuk Pikuni tree sit, was sitting contemplatively on a log. So I asked him what the final determinations of Midnight Matt Dodt's April 4th court appearance were. Gene said the finalized deal is that Midnight Matt was released (after two months in jail), with the understanding that if he returns to court in Alameda County under similar circumstances, that the current charges will be revived and adjudicated. Also, a part of the deal concerned previously unresolved legal issues, all of which have apparently been straightened out. We the general public will appreciate Zachary Running Wolf (who initiated the tree sit) and the jail support team posting on the Indybay IMC the full details regarding the conclusion of Earth First!er and Copwatch member Midnight Matt Dodt's legal situation.
BASIC-LY, THE JUDGE DISMISS'D THE CASE BECAUSE NO WITNESSES APPEAR'D TO TESTIFY AGAINST MATT ..
SHE {THE JUDGE} SAY'D, AT MATT's PREVIOUS COURT-APPEARANCE RE THIS CASE,
THAT SHE WOULD DO JUST THAT, AND THEN SHE DID SO ...

AS A GREAT PLAY-WRITER ONCE SAY'D: "ALL's WELL THAT ENDs WELL" .....

Well, all is not totally wonderful. Midnight Matt spent a total of 67 days in jail, when in fact he did nothing more then defend himself from an encroaching attacker, a man who calls himself Drayco. The reason the story's ending isn't completely happy is due to the fact that a man who was altogether innocent, was chosen as the attacker, and the attacker, Drayco, continues to wander about People's Park, constantly threatening people at random, picking fights, and generally playing the role of chaos agent for the police. Not surprisingly, Drayco has developed a particularly cozy relationship with the University and Berkeley police department, yet no one blinks an eye. "Yeah! Matt's case has been dismissed!" I have a hard time sharing the ecstacy. Of course, I am glad the case isn't being continued further. That's because I know justice wouldn't have been served, that they would have attempted to lock Matt away for possibly years. But at the same time I recognize the next person may not be so lucky. Who will they be? If Drayco comes flailing at you or me, as he actually has done to many others, and we attempt to protect ourselves, let's say with a u lock for instance, or a stick, are we going to jail on charges of assault? And will it be "only" for two months, or this time are they going to carry the case forward and try to put you or me away for years. This might all sound hypothetical, but it's not. Far from it. Drayco isn't just a lone bully in People's park, but is very much a tool of the police and all is far from well here.
