For years, folks in the DIY community have been working on ways to make
our communities more self-reliant and more supportive of each other.
Many envision a world in which people don't need police or laws to tell
them how to be a good person.
And people naturally ask "Without police, wouldn't there be chaos?" and
"What about the bad people?" We get asked these legitimate questions
all the time. It's time we acknowledged that safety and security is an
important concern, began to wrestle with some possible answers, and
provide functional alternatives to rule by violence and coercion.
This is a structured workshop to plan ways to keep our communities safe
at all levels. Accountability process, community crisis response,
education and public perception, mutual support and solidarity, defense
of communities, and making the police obsolete -- these are some of the
challenges we'll tackle.
