Gasland (http://www.gaslandthemovie.com) exposes environmental damages caused by the process of extracting natural gas known as “fracking”. Thousands of families have had their water contaminated. The main company involved in this practice in the US is Halliburton. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND.
There will be a potluck dinner also.
Afterwards, at 7:00, we will show The Economics of Happiness (http://www.theeconomicsofhappiness.org), which describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance—and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization. We will hear from a chorus of voices from six continents including Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten and more.
This program will repeat a week from today, April 28.
Sponsored by the BFUU Social Justice Ctee as part of our Conscientious Projector Series
