Walk for Choice Santa Cruz says "Keep Your Politics Off My Body"
On February 26th, more than a hundred people united energetically in Santa Cruz, along with cities across the nation, to demonstrate their disgust with systemic violence against women. At noon, people converged at the Clock Tower before marching down Pacific Avenue to Laurel St. People chanted "Not the Church, Not the State; Women must decide their fate" as they continued up Laurel St. and onto Mission St. / Highway 1 where there was a brief occupation of the Mission and Bay intersection.
The demonstrations were organized in response to HR-3, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act." In large measure, it would render permanent the restrictions on federal funding of abortion in the United States laid out in the Hyde Amendment.
The Hyde Amendment currently bans all federal money from going to abortions, except in cases of incest or rape. The GOP's HR-3 will change this language to "incest or forcible rape." This would mean that a woman would have to somehow prove that rape was "forced" in order to get access to abortion. Protesters say this language reinforces the notion that some kinds of rape are not as serious as others.
A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to "accuser." But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain "victims." This encourages people to believe that women lie about being raped, something most rape victims already have to deal with.
In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. The bill states that if a person is threatening a fetus, that person can be killed under the guise of "self-defense."
In Congress, Republicans have a bill that would let hospitals allow a women to die rather than perform abortion necessary to save her life. It gives hospitals the option to refuse to perform an emergency where the woman's life is at risk.
Congress just voted for a Republican amendment, HR-3, to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic healthcare and family planning in the USA. The federal funding currently is prohibited from going towards abortions under the Hyde Amendment, but now all services are taking a cut such as Cancer screening, HIV testing, pelvic exams, free birth control, and primary care.
Some of the text in this article comes from a 'What's Going On?' flyer passed out at the Clock Tower prior to the march. Text from the flyer was taken from moveon.org, respectively.

Chants from the March
- Tell the folks on Capitol Hill, Don't take away our birth control pills!
- 1, 2, 3, 4, Open up the clinic door! 5, 6, 7, 8, Don't tell us to procreate!
- Not the Church, Not the State; Women must decide their fate!
- If you like safe sex, Save Title X!
- What do we want? Planned Parenthood! When do we want it? Now!
- Whose choice? Our choice!
- Stop the violence, stop the hate; Separation of Church and State!
- Here's my confession; Screw your oppression!

Right on Santa Cruz! Thank you so much for the pics - The fascist-larva Sentinel (edited by a Christian fundamentalist) didn't seem to have isht to report other than the protest blocked traffic (you gotta wonder if the paper shares a room with the police statement office).
Anyhow, it's about time folks started fighting back against the religious fundamentalism that's dragging this country back into the middle ages. It's bad enough the Bible-humping Neanderthal anti-choicers have set up "Creationist" Museum/Adventurelands throughout the South, rewritten history text books in their own narrow authoritarian/chauvinistic image, and made it all but impossible to receive an abortion in most of the MidWest.
One more thing - The Left (whatever that means) really needs to be pro-active these days. The protests in Wisconsin are nice and all but unions really need to be taking the ball and organizing the private sector; same thing goes for pro-choicers - full funding of planned parenthood, single payer healthcare for all, and no more tax-exemption for churches!
oh yeah, mandatory vasectomies for every NRA-fellating O'Reilly factor male over the age 13.
Don't stop marching till ya'll get what's rightfully ours.

Thanks for writing about our Walk For Choice! I was one of the organizers, and it was great to see so many people out there. I also posted some photos of the walk, along with a quick little photo project I did, at:

As a 50 year old peace and choice activist, it is great to see the pictures of all of these young people getting involved. I love the signs and you can really see the energy in the pictures. Peace and choice. We won't go back.
I was raised a good catholic girl and, of course, that means you're"pro-life." I went to college and began to question what I had been taught. I soon realized that women are smart enough to make their own decisions on personal issues. I decided I was very much pro-choice and I haven't been to church since. Actually, I have been to some catholic weddings but always with my Pro-Women Pro-Choice bumper sticker on my car in the parking lot! A lot of catholics are nice people but they blindly follow what they are told. When those beliefs infringe on human rights, I believe that is absolutely wrong.
Rich christian girls always have and always will have access to abortion services. What these right wing hypocrites want to do is force their "beliefs" on poor and minority women and force them into the back alleys to die. The same politicians who send young people to die for "freedom" are the same ones who want to deny U.S. women control over their very own bodies. Isn't that sick?
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
