"Leader in Real Time Traffic Intelligence"
Narus calls itself the global leader in real-time traffic intelligence for the protection and management of large IP networks.
From their website: "With Narus, service providers, governments and large enterprises around the world can immediately detect, analyze, mitigate and target any unwanted, unwarranted or malicious traffic. Narus solutions provide its customers with complete, real-time insight into all of their IP traffic from the network to the applications, enabling customers to take the most appropriate actions quickly."
Appropriate action? In Egypt that meant repercussions against protesters. Check out some the governments they say they've sold to according to their website: Telecom Egypt, Saudi Telecom, Pakistan Telecom Authority.
According to Wikipedia, Narus provides technology to governments to facilitate the mass surveillance of their citizens. Yesterday the Raging Grannies and San Jose Peace and Justice Center co-sponsored a demonstration in front of Narus' headquarters in Sunnyvale. The Raging Grannies said that although not all applications of DPI are necessarily nefarious, it is a technology that should be subject to the strictest trade compliance export regulations.
