Support Bradley Manning (w/Speaker Daniel Ellsberg)

Date:
Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Time:
11:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
Location Details:
Berkeley Old City Hall, 2134 MLK Jr. Way

Take the street, shut down MLK!

The formal event is organized by groups such as Code Pink, Courage to Resist, and World Can't. Speaker Daniel Ellsberg will be at the protest to support Bradley Manning, and to end the wars in the Middle East. However the masses can decided to move beyond the speaking event and shut down the heart of the city if they are inspired.

During the last city council meeting of 2010, Berkeley City Council had an opportunity to demand the freedom of Bradley Manning, but the council backed out due to pressure from right-wing and soft-liberal organizations. The city was also afraid of a boycott of Berkeley businesses during the holiday season - previous "boycott Berkeley" campaigns had hurt Berkeley businesses.

This posting is wrong. We are NOT shutting down MLK. We are having a press conference at 11 am at Old City Hall, then a solemn procession to the Marine Recruiting Station on Shattuck Square. As far as we know, no one from CODEPINK or World Can't Wait posted this. I don't know who did this, but it doesn't represent any of the groups participating tomorrow. Also, Daniel Ellsberg will not be there, but Mike Gravel WILL speak.

Our goal is to get media focus on closing guantanamo, freeing cleared detainees, and supporting whistleblowers such as wikileaks and bradley manning--NOT to get into a struggle with the police or anyone else. The press conference and rally are educational advocacy-- NOT confrontational. I wonder if the poster is with the police, FBI, or is some sort of provocateur? Come to our event, but don't derail our purpose by taking over MLK or any other street.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
