United Students Against Sweatshops Worker Tour:
Meet Workers who Sew UC Davis T-shirts and Sweatshirts
When: Thursday, November 11th, 7pm
Where: 131 Cowell Hall, UC Santa Cruz campus
Maritza Vargas, who sews t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies sold at the University Bookstore, will be on campus today to talk about how her union has established living wage pay at the groundbreaking Alta Gracia factory in the Dominican Republic where she works, and the impact this has had on her community. She will be joined by former Nike factory worker Gina Cano, who fought with her 1800 coworkers to earn over $2 million in legally-mandated severance pay from Nike, as well as well as paid job re-training and priority rehiring in other Nike factories. Both women share their struggle to form unions and establish fair pay and working conditions in the apparel industry, and discuss labor rights in the apparel industry at large. This evening will be an incredible opportunity to shorten the global supply chain by bringing students, community activists, and workers together in person.
