People's Park Tree-Sit Update: Day Eight
UC Berkeley, City of Berkeley, UC Police, and BPD - "stay the fuck off our land. "
The Muwekma Park(aka People's Park) tree-sit has reached its eighth day. Organizers have fought off Berkeley PD, the University, and the rain to launch and sustain this action. The objective of getting up in the trees is to let the university and the city of Berkeley know that any talk (much less plans) of redeveloping the park will be met with this style of preemptive direct action.
Lead Organizer Zachary Running Wolf - "The trees in the park are 41 years old, and thus represent 4 decades of peoples' struggle against the oppressive university and the "liberal" city of Berkeley. There is no way we are going to let them redevelop this communal space. There will be no more cutting of the vegetation in the park, and basically we are issuing a stay-away to the police, the UC, the regents, and the city. None of these officials are welcome in Muwekma Park."
So far UC Police have stolen a hammock, a harness, and a rope - thus organizers are asking for donations to continue the tree-sit indefinitely. If possible please stop by the park and donate either your time, resources, or money and help sustain this direct action until there is no more threat of redevelopment. And this land will forever be Muwekma/Peoples Park.
All Power to the People's Park!!!!!!

When did this start and can you give us some more info on what's happening?
What can people do to help out the sit?

Dude, have you really run out of windmills to this extent?
..that you have to formulate "sacred" status for a cluster of trees planted in a park for decoration?
....trees younger than you? We're not talkin bristlecone or redwood here' we're talkin planted-by man when you were a teen-ager.
Don Quiote; I have to say it: You've gone Pancho Sanchez status on this farce.

I was there 20 years ago, and they were trying to develop it back then. It's good to see the struggle continue. Why doesn't UC just accept the park already? It's been so long. It seems to be nicer than it used to be.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
