As part of the 3rd I's 8th Annual South Asian Film Festival, premiering today, The Truth That Wasn't There, a documentary film about what really happened in Sri Lanka during the last stages of the war this past May 2009.
Three filmmakers from Europe (one of Sri Lankan decent) found a way into the Northern parts of the country, and came out with tons of footage, 4,000 photos and interviews etc. The truth is finally coming out, because during that time, the repressive Sri Lankan government did not allow any media into the North. There is little evidence of what occured in terms of media coverage. Reports of human rights abuses have surfaced, of course, but now we have even more proof.
The film also addresses the trauma the filmmakers experienced after witnessing what they witnessed, loss of innocence at the tragedy, violence and suffering.... THE TRUTH THAT WASN'T THERE, is now finally coming out.
