Over fourteen weeks after dismissal, still no word on AETA4 case
Still no update after several months
As of this posting, the AETA4 legal team have still not received word from the government. It has now been over fourteen weeks since Judge Whyte’s dismissal without prejudice, and exactly eight weeks since FBI agents took a sample of Joseph’s DNA in an attempt to prove that his DNA is present on a particular megaphone allegedly seized from Maryam's vehicle back in 2008.
The AETA4 were arrested on February 20, 2009 and accused of Animal Enterprise Terrroism. They each faced a maximum of five years in prison. The accusations were that they participated in home demonstrations, created flyers, and chalked sidewalks to oppose the University of California's animal vivisection.
One attorney's opinion is that the government could have until the end of the statute of limitations, sometime in 2013, to re-indict the individuals. It's unclear if a judge would let this kind of delay fly.
What is going on within the Department of Justice and FBI is anybody’s guess. However, the AETA4 case should NOT be regarded as closed. This case still needs our help, support, and continued fund-raising efforts in the chance that they are re-indicted.
