Come take an interactive tour of the Ecology Center’s environmentally friendly demonstration site. Learn about a broad- spectrum of simple improvements that can be made to green an urban home.
This tour includes:
* Berkeley’s first city-permitted wetland / greywater system
* solar panels * on-demand and solar water heater * water saving fixtures * natural and recycled building materials
* rainwater cistern and water catchment * washing machine greywater * a living roof garden * organic permaculture food forest
* native drought tolerant plants * mushroom cultivation and more.
The second half of the day features longtime native plant landscaper Lyn Talkovsky. She'll give a talk and clinic on designing and maintaining your yard with native plants. She'll discuss plant varieties, growing conditions, troubleshooting, and local sources for plants, with ample time for your questions and a walking tour of the neighborhood's great gardens.
Stick around afterwards and participate in our 10/10/10 Global Work Party for 350.org's global day of action. From 1pm to 4pm we'll be redoing and refreshing the earthen plaster on the cob wall of our shed. Come get your hands in the clay and learn a little about building with the earth.
Sunday, October 10, 2010, Begins at 10am.
