**SPEAK OUT AGAINST METHYL IODIDE! NEW TOXIC CHEMICAL TO BE SPRAYED IN OUR
COMMUNITIES!**
WHEN: Tuesday, September 14th, 2010
WHERE: Monterey County Board of Supervisors General Meeting - 168 West
Alisal St., 1st Floor, Salinas, CA.
TIME: 10:00am for public comment
ALSO!! SAME DAY...
Watsonville City Council (7:00pm for public comment - 275 Main St., 4th
Floor, Watsonville, CA.)
Methyl Iodide is a new toxic chemical recently approved for usage by the
California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with high opposition in the United
States. This chemical will replace Methyl Bromide, the pesticide used
mostly on Strawberries and Raspberries.
Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties are most at risk by this chemical since
they use the highest levels of Methyl Bromide (approximately 1.5 million
and 600,000 total pounds in 2008, respectively). Methyl Iodide is four
times more toxic and carcinogenic than Methyl Bromide. If we can convince
Monterey County and the City of Watsonville, two major ag communities, to
oppose to the use of Methyl Iodide, we can send a very strong message to
the EPA and California's DPR.
Come out and support!! WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK OUT - OUR FUTURE DEPENDS ON IT!
