Hotel Housing Occupation in San Francisco
Michael Steinberg
San Francisco, July 19 - It was open house at the Hotel Sierra at 20th and Mission Streets today. Late this afternoon housing activists from Stop the Cuts Bay Area opened up the long vacant residential hotel.
Occupiers found their way into the hotel prior to a rally at 16th and Mission Streets followed by a march up Mission to the site, whose ground floor hosts a T Mobil store.
On the sidewalk below the Sierra, protesters chanted, danced, waved signs, spoke out and enjoyed free food from Food Not Bombs. Upstairs the new residents hung out banners, opened windows and made themselves known for all the world to see.

Dee Allen deserves a huge amount of appreciation and support for consistently frontlining for the environment and related peace & justice concerns. A MacArthur grant would be an appropriate start to appreciate and further his ongoing efforts.
I want to thank people like Dee who add inspiration and confidence to being an Anarchist.
Real revolution means much more than "seizing power", but entails breaking with our dependence on supervision by forging community and mutual aid. Capitalism and a fair society have nothing in common, as the housing situation in the US, and in other westernized, so called free market societies, so profoundly and painfully show us.
I commend people like Dee, who keep alive the spirit of people such as Colin Ward, teaching that revolution means seizing initiative and liberating space.
Also, sister Bevi sends her regards in solidarity with Dee and others in the Anarchist community standing up for liberation and autonomy.
