Bedouin Weaving of Saudi Arabia and its Neighbours
By: Joy Totah Hilden
Date: Thursday, August 5th, 2010
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: 2 Plaza Street, SF, 94116
Joy Totah Hilden is a teacher, artist, writer, and activist. She was born in Palestine before the creation of the state of Israel to Quaker educators, her father a native of Ramallah, and her mother an American. Joy spent the first nine years of her life in Palestine, emigrating with her family to the U.S. in 1944. One of her concerns since her youth has been Arab cultural preservation. She and her teacher-husband lived in Saudi Arabia for twelve years, during which time she did field research in bedouin weaving, while he taught English. She is celebrating the recent publication of her findings, Bedouin Weaving of Saudi Arabia and its Neighbours. For over ten years, she has been organizing her family's archives and writing a biography of her father, Khalil Totah.
