some attorneys on the radio were discussing how the judge's instructions to the jury gave contradictory questions or points to be answered for the four different levels of murder they could have picked. They broke it down into elements like "does the evidence indicate he knew he was drawing a gun", "did Mehserle intend to fire it" "did he have specific intent to kill" etc. and the specific instructions for unvoluntary manslaughter were contradictory so their final result of involuntary manslaughter with gun enhancement can't logically be consistent. In other words, Mehserle can't face double jeopardy, but it sounds like there will be a lot of material to follow up on.
