A safe space for community to gather and exercise our First Amendment Rights to Freedom of Speech.
This event is BYOF (Bring Your Own Flag) or just come to witness.
For the 6th year in a row we will create a safe space for the ritual burning of American flags.
In the United States burning a flag is an act of protected speech under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, as established in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), and reaffirmed in U.S. v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990).
In 2005 there was a Flag Burning Amendment before Congress which was defeated. It is a credit to our country that our freedoms include the burning of it's flag as a form of protest or whatever. This level of Free Speech is to be celebrated.
People have different reasons they choose to burn the flag. Reasons that some have given include:
- An expression of freedom.
- An exhibition of 1st Amendment Rights of Freedom of Speech (which includes flag burning).
- A protest of the government.
- A celebration of our country and democracy.
- A sacred burn ritual.
Whatever your reason, we will create a safe space and facilitate a ritual in which everyone is welcome to share. We've hosted and facilitated a peaceful and respectful flag burn successfully for 5 years. We feel it is important to demonstrate this freedom and welcome others to join in.
Feel FREE to join us with your flag or come as a witness to this community friendly event.
