Award winning documentary, “Operation Small Axe” Screenings in Santa Cruz
On May 26th , the award winning controversial documentary “Operation Small Axe” will be coming to Barrios Unidos and UC Santa Cruz.
“Operation Small Axe” which gets its name from the lyrics of a Bob Marley song, is about the turbulent year of 2009; where a police murder was caught on videotape, the people rebelled in the streets in more than one way, and the cop who pulled the trigger, was indicted for murder. The trial was then moved to Los Angeles.
“Operation Small Axe” is a documentary that follows around one of the most progressive voices in media, in the nation, that of The Prisoners of Conscience Committee's Minister of Information JR Valrey, who can be heard regularly on Pacifica Radio and on XM radio. In the midst of all the action, in the documentary, he is a reporter who is summing up what he is experiencing and reporting on, which is very gripping and emotional. This documentary captures his organizing and journalistic talent and gives the people in the impacted community, a chance to voice their opinion of the events at hand; a perspective that is never heard in the corporate mainstream media.
In March of 2010, at the Patois Human Rights Film Festival in New Orleans, “Operation Small Axe” won the Rise Up Award, for being the most motivational film. Do not miss your chance to see one of the most captivating and eye opening cinematic experiences of the year, this is a documentary on police terrorism that will be talked about for decades to come, and documented in the cinematic history of this country.
“Operation Small Axe” has already been screened in South Africa, Libya, Malaysia, France, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, New Orleans, Oakland, and San Francisco, just to name a few of the places. It will be coming to Santa Cruz on Wednesday, May 26th at the UC Santa Cruz Stevenson Center #175 and Barrios Unidos 1817 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz, CA.
The director Adimu Madyun and the subject of the documentary, the Minister of Information JR will be on hand for a Q&A after the showings.
