UFCW's Hide the Weenie LM2 Nut Shell Game

by LY
Most of us older folks probably remember going to a fair or carnival and seeing the seedy character taking peoples money while playing the nut shell game
With some fancy hand work he’d usually dupe his victims into thinking they had the right shell but nine times out of ten the unsuspecting victim would be wrong and would lose their money.

It would appear in my opinion that the UFCW may have a “nut shell game” of their own!

After combing through the US Department of Labor’s LM2 reports for my local union it “appears” that the UFCW may be trying to play “hide the weenie” with member’s money while issuing themselves higher wage increases. I’ll try and lay it out for folks and see if you agree.

I will post links for each report from years 2000 - 2008. Please excuse the attached photos of Osama Bin Laden on some of the LM2 reports, the links for the LM2 reports were taken from a disgruntled Local 8 member’s web site Apparently the “disgruntled member” sees some similarities between Jack Loveall and his family of UFCW Local 588/ 8 and Osama Bin Laden. Whether I agree or disagree with the disgruntled Local 8 members’s comparison to the Loveall family and Bin Laden is an non issue, but being that this member has provided easy access links to the locals LM2's I will use them.

Below are the LM2 reports I’ll be working from.

In honor of the recent retirement of the Local 8 Secretary Treasure (and son in-law to Jack Loveall) Michael Tursky, we will use him for our first example:

If you view each LM2 from years 2000 to 2004 you will see that Tursky’s “Allowances” and “Disbursements for Official Union Business” never exceeded $11,500 for a years time.

Then in 2005 you’ll notice that Tursky’s “Allowances” sky rocket to $30,000! That’s a $18,000 difference in one year! You’ll also notice that the entire $30,000 was listed under “Allowances” and 0 was listed under “Disbursements for Official Union Business”. What? Tursky as S/T had no “Offical Union Business” in 2005? And why in one year did it cost the members another $18,000 for one individual’s allowances? Could this be Local 588/ 8's nut shell game in hiding yearly raises for union officials and employees of the union?

What I do know is between 2004 and 2005 when rank n file members were being hit hard with concessions the Slaydon reform crew was hitting stores hard from Sacramento to Modesto with a flyer outlining the exuberant raises being taken down by the local union officers and staff. I know this is factual because I was part of the reform group and helped distribute some of the flyers myself. I find it to be very suspect that in 2005 the “Disbursements” and “Allowances” could sky rocket from the previous years between 2000-2004. Could it really have cost the local that much more of members money in one years time to do union business? Or...was this just a clever “nut shell game” to continue union officer bloated salaries and raises and hoping the rank n file following the LM2's wouldn’t notice?

Ok now let’s take a look at a union staffer, just an employee of the union, not an officer.

Let’s look at Exec. Secretary Leslie Bouchard(Jacques Loveall’s personal secretary).

In 2004 Leslie grossed $80,426. She was disbursed $93 for “Official Union Business” for a total of $80,519.(Not a bad yearly salary for a secretary)

Now look at year 2005! Leslie grossed $81,000. She had $6885 for “Allowances” and another $9449 disbursed for “Official Union Business” for a total of $97,334.

Leslie in “one years time” was disbursed an extra $16,241 for “Official Union Business”(wink-wink-nod-nod) or was given a $16,241 wage increase.

You tell me, hidden wage increase for Leslie, or in a twelve month period the cost of doing “Union Business” went up $16,241 for one union staffer?

I’d sure like to see all the receipts to validate Leslie’s extra $16,241 for doing “Official Union Business” which by the way all rank n file members in good standing have a “legal right” to view.

Comb through the LM2's yourselves and add all the “extra dues dollars” distributed to all union officers and staff in the year 2005 and add it all up and just see how much “more” it cost hard working members of this union to get “less”! Now add up the cost from 2005 til 2008! As a dues paying member of this local do you feel your getting your moneys worth?

Hide the weenie?... Nut shell game?...Or legit cost of doing “Official Union Business”? You decide.

Not a member of this UFCW local? No problem! Go to this link and look up your locals LM2's and see if they are playing a similar “nut shell game with your dues money.
