Mining in Central America
Bay Area human rights advocates Nestor Castillo, Luz Guerra, and Dale Sorensen will discuss the effects of mining on local populations in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. They will describe how large North American corporations reap huge profits while destroying communities surrounding mine sites. Foreign-owned mines use up to 220 gallons of water per minute, yet local residents have to buy water, by the bucket, for their families and animals.
In Guatemala it has been documented that the Marlin mine contaminated water supplies and damaged homes while the company harassed protesters. In Honduras skin rashes, hair loss and health problems have been reported after Goldcorp began its mining operations in 2000. Resistance to mining has been met with ongoing death threats, kidnapping attempts and assassinations against activists.
In early January, Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes declared, "My government will not authorize any mining extraction projects." However, Pacific Rim refuses to pack up and leave, despite the conflicts and violence that its presence has generated.
The presentation, sponsored by the Task Force on the Americas, will be held at the
First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael.
A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The venue is wheelchair accessible. For more information: 415/924-3227, mitf [at] igc.org This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or http://www.mitfamericas.org
