Land, Water, Blockades, Settlements: Roots of the Israel-Palestine conflict
Sharat G. Lin tells what every American should know about the U.S. role and how peace can be achieved
Sixty-two years after the creation of the State of Israel, Palestinians continue to be trapped in Gaza and the West Bank, unable to travel freely to their ancestral homes. They are confronted with a vast array of walls, checkpoints, roadblocks, and military patrols that support a draconian system of apartheid. Israel says it is for self-defense.
The Gaza Freedom March of December 2009 was one more attempt to defy the Israeli blockades, but it revealed what is really behind them. Sharat G. Lin was there to find out.
Dr. Lin is president of the San Jose Peace and Justice Center. He writes on the Middle East, South Asia, global political economy, and labor migration, and is a contributing author in the recently-published book Studies in Inequality and Social Justice (edited by Kira Hall). He has been actively involved with the Israel-Palestine issue since studying under Professor Walid Khalidi, founder of the Institute for Palestine Studies, then in Beirut, Lebanon nearly 40 years ago
