Community Leaders Want To Re-Open DQ-University.
DQ-University is California's One & Only Inter-Tribal University. But, Has Been Closed Since Losing The School's WASC Accreditation & Federal Funding Back In 2005. As of Today, The Current DQ-University Board of Trustees' Has Only Five Members. Which is Well Below The Mandated Requirement Listed In The Bylaws of DQU.
According to The DQ-University Board of Trustees' Bylaws, Article IV Section 1. Composition. The Board of Trustees shall be composed of 16 American Indians/Native Americans at Least Nine (9) of whom must be members of Federally Recognized Tribes. Eleven (11) of the Trustees shall be Regular Trustees and two (2) shall be student Trustees, one of who shall be from a Federally Recognized Tribe."
Community Leaders Want a Fair & Free Election to Fill the Empty Seats On The Board of Trustees. The DQ-University Board of Trustees' Bylaws also State in Article IV Section 3. Elections. (a) ANNUAL ELECTIONS. Elections of regular Trustees shall take place in April of Each Year. Yet, No Open Elections Have Taken Place Since The School Has Closed.
Famous Native American Scholar & Former DQ-University Instructor, Lehman Brightman Had this To Say, "I Would Love to See DQ-University Open Her Doors Once Again. I Can't Understand Why The Gaming Tribe's In California Won't Put One or More of Their Staff on a New Board To Help Rebuild DQU's Infrastructure and Restore the School's Integrity & Creditability." Brightman Said "We Have Over 30 Gaming Tribes Within The State of California Alone Whom Could Easily Afford to Donate 100,000.00 Per Casino Annually & We Could Transform DQ-University Into The Haskell of The West."
Professor Brightman is the Founder and National President of United Native Americans, Inc. a non-profit Indian Organization formed in San Fransisco,California in 1968. Professor Brightman Established and Coordinated the First Native American Studies Program in the United States at UC Berkeley in 1969, and has since taught at the University of California in San Diego, Sacramento State University, Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California & DQ-University Near Davis California.
Today, Many Native American Students Cannot Afford to Attend a UC and or State College. With The Rising Cost in Tuition Around The Country, DQ-University if Properly Maintained and Funded Can Be a Life Raft in The Ocean For Those Searching for Alternatives To Western Education.
According to The Last Census Publicly Released, California Maintains The Largest Population of
American Indian and Alaska Natives. Many of Whom are Out of State Indians and or Citizens of Non-Gaming Tribes.
A Majority of Tribal Colleges Across The Nation Are Now Revitalizing Their Indigenous Language's. "California was and still is one of the most linguistically diverse parts of the world. Estimates as to how many indigenous languages were spoken here before contact range from 80 to 100". From The Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival Web Page.
Other Unique Educational Courses Which are Offered at Our Tribal Colleges are The Important Life Lessons of Self-Sustainability. For Insistence, Alternative Energy Programs are In High Demand in Rural Areas Such as American Indian Reservations. A Vast Majority of American Indians Living on Reservations Cannot Afford to Pay High Electricity Bills During The Harsh Winter and Summer Months. By Offering Classes In Alternative Energy's Such as How to Harness The Natural Power of The Wind With Turbines and The Importance of Installing Solar Panels on Our Reservations, We Can Help Ensure That Everyone Living On a Reservation Will Never Have to Worry About How to Keep Their Lights.
Traditional Farming Practices Such as Indigenous Permaculture Must Be Implemented On Our Reservations. By Rediscovering Our Knowledge of Plants We Can Promote a Healthier Diet For Our Tribal Community's where Obesity and Diabetes have Reached Epidemic Proportions.
As The Indigenous People of Turtle Island We are Rich with Culture and Traditions, We Have Much to Share with Each Other and The World. The Times of Our People Being Divided Must Come to an End. Re-Opening DQ-University will Allow for All to Unify as One, as Brothers and Sisters. Education is The Key to Our Future, The Key to Our Survival.
