Dear Neighbors,
We are parents that live in the Emeryville who use the Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC).

The Emeryville Child Development Center has been serving families and children from ages 4 months-PreK in Emeryville for 31 years.  It brings together children subsidized under a state grant along with families that pay full rate in a high-quality, neighborhood program.

On Dec. 21st parents were notified of the City’s move to begin the process of outsourcing ECDC’s services and firing all of ECDC’s teachers!

Despite parent protests that included a meeting with 60 angry parents, the Emeryville City Council and City staff have been moving forward with a plan to outsource the Center. We have repeatedly asked for an ECDC task force to work on a long-term, sustainable funding solution for our Center. Our parents are serious, thoughtful, and committed to finding a solution.

By outsourcing, the City Council adds another layer of bureaucracy between themselves and the people who live here.  It ensures that the companies and businesses won't be approached for fundraising and there will be no need for "give-backs" to the community from developers when they're provided with generous subsidies.  Outsourcing may retain a form of childcare, but it will weaken resident voices and the accountability of the Council to the people that live in Emeryville.

The Rec Center programs will be considered next in the plan for outsourcing, and then what will remain in Emeryville is an imbalance of high-level administrators whose full-time jobs will be to make sure that the people who use the services here are at a remove from the City Council.

The Council will be voting on the final move to outsource on April 6th @ 6pm at City Hall.

Contact our council members to voice your concern about the outsourcing of City Services:
