Noose Found in UCSD's Giesel Library

by fedupwiththisshit
In the wake of a racist frat party mocking Black History Month, racially derogatory and inciteful language by a member of the student-supported publication, the Koala, on UCSD's television station, and a week of protests organized by the Black Student Union and allies, a noose was found hanging on the seventh floor of the Giesel Library.

These disgusting incidents are the tip of the iceberg of a toxic racist, mysogenist, queerphobic climate that this fucking university has coddled, fostered and encouraged over the past fifty years. Numerous students of color, especially black students - who make up only 1.3% of the student population, have reported they do not feel safe on the UCSD campus. The administration, which initially emphasized free speech rights, has done nothing but talk platitudes. God damn them.

This shit has got to stop.

Students are organizing a protest of this outrageous act, this ultimate expression of white privilege, at 8AM Friday morning on Library Walk. Wear Black.

REAL PAIN. REAL ACTION!

Seeing as this is a criminal act it seems like the UCSD administration has nothing left to hide behind. In the first picture posted I thought I saw campus police or RSOs documenting the scene. I hope the authorities were notified.

Thank you for notifying us of this terrible incident. It tells us in the work-a-day world that these students who perpetrated this racist party have too much time on their hands. They should be required to either take more classes or provide volunteer tutoring to the children of the workingclass who do not get an adequate education. UC San Diego, like all other universities, is surrounded by the workingclass, those of us who sell our labor for less than $76,000 a year, usually much less, by definition about 80% of the population. It is the children of the workingclass who do not get an adequate education and therefore can never attend UC, a taxpayer supported institution that functions as a rich folks' finishing school. They could also do other volunteer work to help the workingclass such as provide food at the local food bank/soup kitchen or provide tenant counseling, a good activity for future lawyers as well. They also could provide English-language tutoring to children whose first language is not English and who are not keeping up in school due to language problems. There is also a great need for math tutoring. Considering these are college students, where did they get the time, much less the horrible idea of this stupid party? When I was in college, I had lots of reading to do and a term paper to write for each of the 5 courses I was taking. We were expected to read hundreds of pages a week, and a 3-day weekend was a good time to catch up with reading and writing term papers. ONE DEMAND SHOULD BE TO ABOLISH ALL FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES as they cultivate contempt for the workingclass, racism and male chauvinism.

Is it really appropriate to call this a display of white privilege when it's not even known if the person who did this is white? Maybe it's a display of "I think I'm funny and want to get a rise out of people by being as offensive as possible," and maybe it was done by someone who wasn't white--we don't know. Being a tasteless, sensationalist, and/or racist asshole doesn't automatically mean you're a white person, and as a white person, I don't want to be lumped in the category of people who have or would do something like this...

Why not just get a mannequin, cover it with a white sheet and a pillow case with holes for the eyes and hang it from the noose. Fight fire with fire. See how the rednecks like that!!!!

And a swastika was carved into a Jewsih students door at UC Davis this week.
So much for California being a beacon of tolerance
by whats going on?

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Saturday he is deeply troubled by recent acts of bigotry at three University of California campuses.
Schwarzenegger's statement comes after a string of incidents this month on the campuses in Davis, Irvine and San Diego.

Students at the San Diego campus took over the chancellor's office Friday to protest the hanging of a noose in the library. The noose was discovered less than two weeks after an off-campus party mocking Black History Month where students urged people to dress as ghetto stereotypes and promised there would be chicken, watermelon and malt liquor.

A Jewish student last week found a swastika carved into her dorm room door at the Davis campus.

And earlier this month, 11 students were arrested for interrupting a talk by Israel's ambassador, Michael Oren, at the Irvine campus. The Zionist Organization of America, based in New York, has accused UC Irvine's chancellor of failing to condemn anti-Semitic speech and has asked potential students and donors to boycott the campus.

"I am deeply troubled by the horrific incidents that recently took place on various campuses of the University of California system," Schwarzenegger said in the statement. "There is no excuse for this kind of behavior in our system of higher education or anywhere else and it will not be tolerated."
