In 1990, one year before Rodney King was beaten by several Los Angeles police officers, Copwatch was founded by three women in Berkeley and volunteers began videotaping the actions of local law enforcement.

Copwatch, which has since inspired a national network of police accountability groups, is now commemorating 20 years. The fatal shooting of Oscar Grant, an unarmed man, by a BART police officer last year reminds that their work -- documenting and questioning police use of force -- is still needed.

A 20th Anniversary benefit concert is being held on Thursday, March 11th at Ashkenaz in Berkeley -- timed to also honor International Women's Day. Sisters in the Pit -- which bills itself as "sexy rock, black-female style" -- are headlining.
