Community Speaks Out Against BART Efforts Reduce the Value of Oscar Grant's Friends' Lives, 2/10/10: audio
At a community and family press conference held at the Fruitvale BART Station in Oakland on February 10th, 2010, Minister Keith Muhammad; Cephus Johnson, Oscar Grant's uncle; Wilson Riles, former Oakland City Councilperson; Jack Bryson, father of two of Oscar Grant's friends; and community activists Tony Coleman and Rachel Jackson speak out against BART's recent efforts to publicly demean Oscar Grant's friends and blame them for his murder.
Listen now:
(audio 17:24)
The assembled corporate media covering the family and community press conference are called out for failing to recognize that Johannes Mehserle is the one on trial for the murder of Oscar Grant, not his friends. Likewise, the corporate media is reminded that it has paid virtually zero attention to the roles of Tony Pirone and Marysol Domenici in verbally and physically assaulting Oscar Grant and his friends on the Fruitvale platform on January 1st, 2009, thereby escalating things to the point where Mehserle stepped into the situation and shot Oscar Grant in the back. BART is also called out for its apparent effort to demean and devalue African American lives.
Those who want to tell BART in person that their actions are unacceptable are encouraged to attend the February 11th BART Board of Directors' meeting: Let BART know: Blaming Oscar's friends for his death is shameful & will not be tolerated
