First They Came For the Palestinians.... Sheikh Jarrah as the Embryo of a Future Society
"First they came for the Communists but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews but I was not Jewish so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
Pastor Martin Niemöller on the passivity shown by people while the Nazis rose to power.
Last week the family of Al-Kurd were evicted from parts of their house by settlers claiming ownership from before the Nakba of 1948. This is the fifth Palestinian house to be evicted in Sheikh Jarrah by settlers in the last couple of months. Although lawyers working on behalf of those Palestinians families in Sheikh Jarrah traveled all the way to Turkey to collect documents proving that ownership on these houses always belonged to Palestinian, an Israeli judge refused to accept them and ordered the families to be evacuated. More, many of the Palestinian families are refugees themselves, who the Israeli government or courts will never recognize their right to the property and land left behind that is now belong to Israelis.
while i spent part of the my day to show solidarity with the Al-Kurd and other Palestinian families and to document the threats and violence inflicted on them by the settlers, i notice the desperation and fear all around me. The Al-Kurd property is thrown all over the yard, as if someones life and history has just ended.
The settlers protected by Israeli soldiers and privet security personal yell at me that i should say "smile" before taking their picture. when i ask them how does it feels to live in someone's else house they reply by claiming that Im a traitor and not even Jewish, since i don't follow strict religious laws. i ask if the soldiers and security personal that protect them follow these laws, they avoid the question and keep cursing me.
this is what the Al-Kurd family who now needs to share their yard with the settlers deal with everyday. the settler attempt to include in the enemy list Palestinians and Jews who do not follow strict Jodahist laws is not surprising. Settlers are known to target many marginalize groups such as queers, Cristian Jews, Israeli leftists, and of course- Palestinians.
First they came for the Palestinians, the Palestinians are the first line in the settlers attempt to construct a theocratic state that follows race laws. after they get rid of the Palestinians, we are next. non-religious, radical, humanist Jews. We who do not want to die for "god's land", we who want to love freely, we who do not smile when a family is being thrown out to the street.
