Historical relevance. If I'm not mistaken the 'blue meanies' who played a large role in the 1969-71 Berkeley anti Vietnam protests, were Alameda county sheriffs. They came in with a belligerant attitude and did a lot of back-and-forth tussling with students, and they shot and killed a man James Rector sitting on the roof of a tall house on Dwight street:
