Kerr Hall on November 21st

by Occupy California
There is a big risk that Kerr hall will be busted by the cops tonight. If at all possible, head down there and join in the fray!
I will keep updating this all night as I hear from occupiers what is going on.
UC rejected all demands. Cop raid imminent. Get to UC Kerr Hall ASAP.
-- SC Autonomous Action Alerts.
§8pm update
by inside sources
UPDATE: ~8pm - There is a potluck going on at Kerr Hall

UPDATE 8:23 UCSC Vice Chancellor Felicia McGinty announced that it is almost certain that Cops will come TONIGHT if negotiations fail. In other words, You should be there tonight, as well

UPDATE 8:47 Join the joint chant (inside and out) at Kerr Hall. “When I say ‘People’ you say ‘Power.’ ‘People,’ ‘POWER.’”
§barricade or sit in
by that is the question
11/21 ~7:45: Kerr Hall: currently voting on whether to barricade or sit in. Approximately 69 occupiers at this time.
§Campus is closed
by Occupy California
UPDATE 9:13 If you aren’t on campus you might have troubles getting in. A friend just texted me saying, “Campus is closed. A cop is calling his boss to see if I can be let in.” This is testament to the militarization of the University. Now we need the cops permission to enter a campus that we pay for! It ended with the cop saying, “Leave campus or you will be arrested.” Friend was already arrested on Thursday at UC Davis, so she turned around. [*note, UCSC becomes a "closed campus" at 8pm]
§100 people inside Kerr Hall
by RT
9:30pm: Currently 100 people inside Kerr Hall as negotiations threaten to fail
§administrators headed over to Kerr Hall
by Occupy California
9:29pm Cops haven’t come yet, but administrators are headed over to Kerr Hall en masse.
§barricades are up
by Occupy California
UPDATE 9:43 “Just a spoonful of sugar…makes the police state go down…” Know any good show tunes? Head over to Kerr Hall and sing with the occupiers!

UPDATE 9:51 The barricades are up! But the student’s work is never done. Currently the 80 occupiers and a number of journalists are cleaning up in Kerr Hall, making sure that OUR University looks good!
§40+ Students are Inside and Barricaded
by RT
10:00pm: 40+ STUDENTS ARE INSIDE AND BARRICADED
60 STUDENTS ARE SITTING, LINKING ARMS RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOOR
§Administration rejects demands; promises police by midnight
by Occupy California
UPDATE 10:05 The Administration has flat out rejected the demands of the Occupiers, and instead promised that the cops will be at Kerr Hall by midnight. You should be there by 10:30! I was mistaken about campus being closed. If you have any problems…be sneaky. Oh, and if you know any Queen songs they will help you, as that is what the occupiers are currently singing.
§~80 inside, several hundred outside and ~0 cops
by Occupy California
UPDATE 10:28 The occupiers are on the second floor of Kerr Hall (which is the main floor). The cops won’t really be able to get in through the windows without repelling from the roof or from Helicopters (though if they brought helicopters to DAVIS they almost certainly will be at UCSC). Inside the mood is a little tense, but people are calming down by singing and playing music. Currently a few people are still doing security type activities. There are approximately 80 occupiers, several hundred protestors outside and 0 [uniformed] cops at this time.

A student union assembly person remarked that s/he is “pretty sure it will end tonight.”
§singing
by Occupy California
UPDATE 11:22 Occupiers singing “Solidarity Forever,” reading, and generally chilling out.
§Bring warm clothes!
by Occupy California
UPDATE 12:02 Bring warm clothes! Still no cops at Kerr Hall, but several hundred supporters have rallied outside.
§still going strong
by Occupy California
UPDATE 1:52 Occupation still going strong. Wait, I thought the Administration promised the cops would be there by midnight…it seems they can’t hold to any of their promises.
§Police Mobilization
by Occupy California
UPDATE: Police are moving from base of campus toward kerr hall occupation. Support need immediately.
§Police Arrive
by Occupy California
UPDATE 6:50am: Cops w full riot gear @ Kerr Hall. 150 students & faculty outsd. Yr help needed now!

by Occupy California
UPDATE 7:18am: Area coming from sci hill to Kerr blocked. Use paths from McHenry Library or theater arts

UPDATE 7:20am: Outside protesters forced off patio by riot cops
§faculty injury
by Occupy California
UPDATE 7:29am: Male faculty member taken away by emergency personnel in stretcher.
§Prof. Marc Anderson injured in cop advance
by others
Marc Anderson an Anthropology Professor fell off a 12 foot staircase as police were forcing students and faculty off of the Kerr patio. He was carried away by emergency personnel on a stretcher with his neck and head secured.

UCSC Staff page: http://anthro.ucsc.edu/directory/details.php?id=19

"The research and writing of Mark Anderson investigates the intersection between identity politics within nation-states and transnational processes of cultural exchange and racial identification. He has focused on constructions of racial and cultural identity among Garifuna in Honduras, examining how processes of diasporic identifications as “Black” under the signs of modernity and tradition relate to forms of ethnic organization and mobilization under the auspices of indigenous rights. His book on this work is titled Black and Indigenous: Garifuna Activism and Consumer Cultures in Honduras and is forthcoming from the University of Minnesota Press in November, 2009. Mark is developing a future project on the tourist industry in Honduras and has begun to publish on the politics of race in the history of 20th century U.S. anthropology."
§doors being cut
by Occupy California
UPDATE 7:55am: fire are cutting front & back doors. cops pushing crowd out of view.
§"We'll be back!"
by Occupy California
UPDATE 8:10am: All inside exit out back door. No charges, no arrests. Chanting "We'll be back!"
§Post-Kerr Rally (in another occupied space)
by Occupy California
UPDATE 8:28am: Rally at kresge town hall right now.
§Group marches to Kresge Town Hall
by Occupy California
UPDATE 8:16 Riot cops penetrated the barricades and have removed the two largest. All occupiers (about 50) are told that the cops are authorized to let them go free. They freely march as a group to Kresge Town Hall, because UCSC is still occupied! Further interruptions of “business as usual” are being planned.
§Mark Anderson is fine. Both spaces are vacant
by RT
UPDATE 11:00am: Mark Anderson is fine. Both spaces are vacant; Kresge Town Hall is now a free organizing space

At least, unlike the UCSC treesit, this hasn't remained a merely locally covered issue. I guess the Berkeley treesit did make the new York Times.

You guys have been on the weekend rotation of CNN. They show the Wheeler Hall scene, and then talk about how UCSC's administration building is still occupied: http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/11/21/california.student.protest/index.html (click on video to see Santa Cruz)

Time magazine coverage: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1942041,00.html?cnn=yes

I was showing this stuff to someone from Texas, and he sympathised and said it's understandable that they do this.
Often, if you commit a major vehicle crime, you will owe fines on the level of $1000s, and it is like everyone is being levied with the same cost.

A story posted to CNN’s website says that the UCSC administration intends "to wait out the takeover" rather than bringing in police and ending it with arrests.

--

The students made a list of 20 "demands" detailing how they want the administration to increase funding, spokesman Barry Shiller said. But the school has no plans to negotiate the demands with the student body, he said. The school just doesn't have the money, he added.

School officials hope the students realize that their demonstration is "not accomplishing anything" and is "just a disruption" to administrative duties on campus, he said.

The administration will continue to wait out the takeover, but Shiller said he is unsure of how long it will last. The school hopes the students will leave voluntarily, he said.

Everyone write the number for the National Lawyers Guild on your arms in permanent ink. Also, all those speculating in solidarity, please film with your cameras everything!!!! And upload it immediately!!

by Fight!!!
Those of us who cannot be there tonight around the country are waiting anxiously to hear more updates. Fight first, but don't forget to let us know what happens!
by Ramzey
Word has circulated that cops are waiting for crowd to die down, similar to their tactic in Berkeley last night. THey waited for the rain and dark to "subdue" the crowd before letting the occupiers out. They will strike later in the evening.

All those present need to set up a tent city outside, and stay present for protection. Slumber party!

sorry "speculating" should have been "spectating"... its been a long couple of sleepless days.
President Yudof is coming to UCSC to meet with academic senate leaders (the chair, vice-chair, and committee chairs). He (or his office) requested Long Marine Lab (http://www2.ucsc.edu/seymourcenter/contact.html) as the meeting place since he thought it would be less distracting to the campus. He is having similar meetings at all the UC campuses

Map of Kerr Hall and surrounding paths and roads.
by footage
CNN headline news just showed clips of the clashes in Santa Cruz. Police especially brutal
by c
Was Anderson pushed, or he was trying to vacate too quickly, or a cluster of people all ran onto the stairs at once?
I can't visualize the patio. Kerr has some patios which are only accessible from inside the building, and a front patio by the foyer. I assume that he might have been on the front patio because the officers hadn't drilled the door off yet?

UCSC has some nice architecture that blends in with the trees so well, with various bridges and paths leading everywhere. One consequence is that despite biking by Kerr many times on the way to my job at the engineering building, I have a hard time visualizing Kerr - it blends in with trees.

When is this meeting scheduled for? Let's muster the rebels! Educate Escalate Resist!
by Sentinel repost
"UCSC officials initially refused to admit a Sentinel photographer this morning, saying police had insisted the campus be closed for safety concerns. Burns said police believe a media presence could incite demonstrators further, but the photographer was eventually permitted."
by who's asking
Anyone know when this clown is coming to the southern campuses? Or where we can look it up?
