Students Takeover CSU-Fresno Library

by Mike Rhodes (editor [at] fresnoalliance.com)
A student takeover is underway at the library at CSUF. The photo below shows the students holding a meeting this evening in the library to discuss strategy about the occupation.

November 20, 2009 - Students at CSU-Fresno took over the university library tonight. About 100 students and supporters are occupying the second floor of the Madden Library, with many of them studying, some eating pizza, and many of them trying to develop a strategy that will lead to longer library hours. The student demands, however, go beyond longer library hours - they want a larger voice in how the university is run.

The plan, as I understand it right now, is that the students are going to hold a press conference at 10 p.m. where they will issue their demands for longer library hours, co-governance, greater transparency, etc. They will then continue their occupation until the library officially re-opens on Saturday. Student organizers are not expecting to be arrested during this occupation, but the administration is making no guarantees.

Plans for future actions are being discussed.

The students discussed their strategy and then became involved with a discussion with CSUF administrators who were in attendance. Here, Dr. Oliaro talked with the students about the occupation, co-governance, and other student concerns.

This action is a part of massive statewide student activism. We stand in solidarity with all activists and demand that all charges be dropped against all education prisoners. This week both the UC Regents and the CSU trustees voted to raise fees by 32%, this is being met with escalated actions and will continue to be met with escalated actions until the students have taken back every inch of every university.
Administration is the cause of most if not all of the problems, the answer is to restructure the whole damn system, put decision making power in the hands of students and faculty.
Fresno State in particular had it's organizational structure created by Karl Falk when he was president of the university in the early 70s. Falk learned his style directly from Hitler and has imposed that on this campus. We must cleanse this campus from all Nazi influence, from the Joyal building (Joyal was a close friend of Falk and a Nazi sympathizer) to the German encyclopedias donated by Nazi Germany to CSUF back in '38 that are still in the library.

Fuck yeah, Fresno, fuck yeah.

Someone else please articulate this better. But seriously, good work. We're with you all over California.

A group of students met with the Dean of the library. The dean is very supportive and has agreed to work with input from students to have more hours available and stretch the library budget. The dean seems very sincere and we feel we can trust him.
He has also told us that we can stay until 7:30AM which is a full 24 hours since the library opened friday morning.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
