Activism Reactivated: Berkeley Student Food Collective Announces First Annual Harvest Gala
UC Berkeley Students Band Together In Support Of Sustainable Food
Berkeley, CA - A spirit of cooperative action has rekindled and spread among the student population at the University of California, Berkeley. At the forefront of this new interest in cooperative organization is the Berkeley Student Food Collective (BSFC), a group dedicated to the creation of a community-based, cooperatively-run food market/café/deli that will sell fresh, local, healthy, environmentally sustainable, and ethically produced food at an affordable price to Berkeley students and the greater community. On November 20th, the BSFC will hold its First Annual Harvest Gala, a fundraising event as well as an opportunity for potential sponsors to learn more about the organization.
The BSFC was created in response to negotiations taking place between UCB and the fast-food chain Panda Express, which was seeking to operate the first-ever fast food restaurant on Berkeley's campus. In the fall of 2008, concerned students rallied together to oppose the Panda Express contract and provide an alternative. The developments that followed led to the birth of the BSFC and plans to create a cooperatively-run deli/grocery/cafe which will also serve as an educational and social hub where people can learn about sustainable food, hear bands play, see art shows, meet with their student groups, hold events, and most of all, eat great food!
To share its vision with the wider Bay Area community and to raise the necessary funds to make this vision a reality, the BSFC has announced its First Annual Harvest Gala to be held on November 20th in the David Brower Center in downtown Berkeley. The event will include live music, organic food, a silent auction, and guest speakers. Alli Reed, fundraising coordinator for the BSFC, describes the gala as “a formal dinner event with a twist—it's being organized by students and youth, so we're getting creative and fun with art displays, musical performances, and other elements. It's going to be an opportunity to get inspired, to support a really incredible vision and movement, and most of all, to have fun!”
Tickets are on sale now on a sliding scale from $50-$250! You can purchase tickets at bsfcgala.eventbrite.com or go to http://berkeleystudentfoodcollective.org/gala for more information.
