DROP THE CHARGES AGAINST J.R. VALREY!
From the case of Mumia Abu Jamal to the Rodney King rebellions, and more recently the days of rage against the murder of Oscar Grant to the G20 protests in Pittsburgh – the state is up to the same old game. Police single out leaders and journalists (or folks who are both) for the most serious charges during protests, and then the courts tie folks up in political trials to try to silence them, disrupt their work, and intimidate others from speaking out.
Today in Oakland the key case is the felony arson charge against J.R. Valrey, Minister of Information of the Prisoners of Conscience Committee (POCC) and journalist with KPFA, the Block Report and S.F. Bay View. J.R. has been targeted for consistently exposing state repression and for his role as a leader and voice of the community.
J.R. has refused to plead guilty to a misdemeanor for something he didn’t do and is preparing for trial, so folks need to come out and support. His next court date is this Friday, October 30th at 9am, Alameda County Superior Court, Department 11, 1225 Fallon Street, Oakland.
