EAST BAY MUNICIPAL UTILITY. DISTRICT (E.B.M.U.D) THREATENS FAMILIES’ HEALTH AND SAFETY, PUNISHES TENANTS FOR LANDLADY’S CONDUCT
RALLY AND INFORMATIONAL PICKET IN FRONT OF E.B.M.U.D. OFFICE THIS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, FROM NOON TO 1:00 P.M. (375 11TH STREET NEAR FRANKLIN)
In this time of job losses and foreclosures, many of us find our access restricted where it comes to important products, services or subscriptions. But imagine being deprived of indispensable services such as running water!
In addition to having their water service disrupted, tenants at 1550 Bridge Avenue, Oakland, have been fighting for basic repairs for years. Landlady Carole Olive Kotz is responsible for paying the water bill. Yet, when Kotz refuses to pay, E.B.M.U.D. makes the tenants suffer.
Some tenants lived in the same apartment and have paid rent for as long as three decades.
Many, however, are reluctant to complain due to their immigrant status.
Amongst the tenants are families with small children and the medically disabled.
They can not cook, wash the dishes, get a drink of water, bathe, or flush the toilet -- all necessary activities that most of us take for granted.
PLANNED INFORMATIONAL PICKET
A coalition of tenants and supporters, including local religious rights, workers’ rights, and housing rights organizations, will gather to demonstrate in front of E.B.M.U.D.’s downtown office this Wednesday, October 28, from noon to 1 p.m.. E.B.M.U.D.’s offices are located at 375 11th Street near Franklin.
Water is not an option or a luxury! Tenants want to know why E.B.M.U.D. punishes them because landlady Kotz won’t pay her bill. Why not turn off the water service at Kotz’s private residence in Moraga instead?
