The Ssangyong Motor Company strike and plant occupation in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, ended after 77 days on Aug. 5. For the 976 workers who seized the small auto plant on May 22 and held it against repeated quasi-military assault, the settlement signed by Ssangyong court receivership manager Park Young-tae and local union president Han Sang-kyun represented a near-total defeat. Yet the workers fought valiantly and uncompromisingly for over 2 months, demonstrating a militancy and class consciousness sorely lacking in the world today. Like the 6-day occupation of the Republic Windows and Doors factory in Chicago last December, the Ssangyong struggle is an inspiration to workers everywhere, especially as the current crisis has been used as a pretext to attack working class conditions. It's about time we turned the class war back on its feet and started fighting back. The Ssangyong strikers offer us many lessons for doing so.

Film showing of the occupation will be followed by a discussion.
