The City of Petaluma’s Water Conservation Department and nonprofit groups Daily Acts, Petaluma Bounty and Rebuilding Together are forming a unique alliance for the ambitious and fun work project. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. to replace much of the City Hall lawn with a flourishing garden with food crops and native plants. Participants will learn about the theory and technique of sheet mulching, how to set up a system to catch and recycle rainwater, and how to create healthy soil and contemporary design.
Professional landscapers are volunteering as team leaders, and will oversee small groups of people on various parts of the lawn transformation. Participants don’t need prior experience, just a desire to pitch in and help.
The Petaluma workday is taking place in conjunction with the annual Make A Difference Day, in which an estimated 3 million people nationwide will do service projects in their communities. October 24 is also the 350.org International Day of Climate Action, and a worldwide network of groups will be holding events to raise awareness of climate change.
