T4CW: School Starts with a Strike '09
In recent weeks the Maestr@s have spoken with teachers in Kent, Washington who started the year on strike, and teachers in Richmond, CA who started the year with a Strike Authorization Vote. There's also an update on the South Central Farm.
Listen now:
Teachers 4 Class War airs every Monday at 6 PM on Freak Radio Santa Cruz.
9.14.09: We spoke with Pixie Hayward Schickele, president of the United Teachers of Richmond ( http://www.unitedteachersofrichmond.com/ ) about the 93% of Richmond teachers who voted preemptively to authorize a strike in the face of stalled negotiations, an imposed contract that lifts any caps on class size and cuts all spouse and dependent health benefits. We also spoke with Danny Santana, who gives an update on the South Central Farm.
9.25.09: We spoke with Lisa Brackin Johnson of the KENT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
( http://www.kentea.org ), who actually started the process a bit earlier and started the year on strike. She talks about similar grievances, and the deployment of a strike as a tactic.
Stay tuned.
