The Middle East and Ultimate Frisbee
Bringing Youth Together
San Anselmo resident David Barkan, who earlier this year brought together 150 disadvantaged youths from Israel and Palestine to play ultimate Frisbee and build friendship and understanding, will discuss his experience in Israel.
He says ultimate Frisbee promotes fair play and mutual respect between opponents over winning.
The free program is co-sponsored by Westminster Presbyterian Church and From Here to Peace, a Marin-based group dedicated to promoting a peaceful two-state solution to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Are these youth being encouraged to build friendship and understanding in the context of accepting the Jewish-supremacist, neoliberal Israeli state as the dominant force in Palestine and the region? Or are they being encouraged to join together in struggle against both Zionist apartheid and capitalist oppression, recognizing that, even within "1948", Israel is one of the most unequal countries in the world.

The people who need to wake up in Palestine are not the Palestinians, who are already awake to the meaning of Zionism -- bombs and bullets that don't kill you are a powerful antidote to political narcolepsy -- but the self-hating Arabs, a.k.a. Mizrahim, and the other proletarian and sub-proletarian Jews whose only privilege is to be treated less badly than are non-Jewish Arabs.

The fact that these folks are promoting a two-state, apartheid, "solution" of the Palestinian conflict shows that they are on the wrong side of the divide. They would rather put the Palestinians to sleep than wake up the "disadvantaged" Jews they refer to.
