Despite his electoral promises of CHANGE, the Obama administration is clearly following the same foreign policy in Latin America as Bush of increasing the US military presence.

The Obama administration has signed an agreement with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, internationally recognized for his use of death squads against political dissent, to install seven new US military bases on Colombian soil. President Uribe is the United States’ closest ally in the region and is enforcing the US project of militarization, free trade, and repression of social movements.

President Obama wants to increase the number of US military bases and intends to continue using the infamous School of the Americas to train repressive forces to enforce US interests in Latin America. The leaders of the recent coup in Honduras were graduates of the School of the Americas.

The US already has many military bases in Latin America and we have seen their function. The coup leadership in Honduras used the US military base there to refuel the plane they used to expel democratically-elected President Zelaya from the country.

The long and bloody history of U.S. interventions in Latin America demonstrates clearly that the US uses its military to intervene to protect its own commercial and strategic interests at the expense of the Latin American people. Latin America must be free from US interference to decide its own future!

Join us to fight back against Obama’s imperialist policy in Colombia, Latin America, and across the globe!
