Socialism 2009, Building a New Left for a New Era, San Francisco, 7/2-7/5/09: audio
The International Socialist Organization held their first West Coast conference in San Francisco July 2nd through 5th. The "Socialism 2009: Building a New Left for a New Era" conference was split between the Women's Building on 18th and the ISO offices on Capp. Close to 800 people attended attended at least one session over the four-day conference, with most attending numerous. A similar conference has been held annually in Chicago for years. Chicago's 2009 conference was held in June.
This post features audio from six sessions, a small sample of the approximately fifty sessions total held over four days. Included are the open comments, questions, and discussions at the end of each session. Audio from more sessions will be posted to Indybay at a future date.
The first recording here is from the session titled "Three Strikes, the Death Penalty, 'Tough on crime' - Is It Time to Abolish Prisons?" featuring Cameron Sturdevant and Crystal Bybee, moderated by Gillian R. on Friday, July 3rd. (Scheduled speaker Barbara Becnel did not make it.)

Great job our education continues
The Conference was a good occasion for intense discussion about the direction of our common movement . There was a fair amount of debate but though none of it structured as such . One example was when John Pilger denounced the Obama adm. in harsher terms than the ISO liked .Several ISO leaders stood up to say in effect that we should be careful in how we attack Obama due to the mass illusions that people have in him . Pilger, in his trademark very articulate manner, stayed firm in his convinction that we shouldn't let these illusions deter us from presenting a clear analysis .
The audience loved the interchange . ''Unity '' doesn't mean everyone echoing one another .The left has serious differences . Let's air them freely .
There were a couple of problems . While the floor discussion was pretty fair ISO members were called far more often than the many non ISO people present .
Also the admission fee was too expensive and too inflexable . $35 a day , $85 for the weekend was simply too much for many working class people and students especially now with serious unemployment and even more widespread ''Under employment ''.
I'm glad i went but i hope the organizers take note of these contradictions .
