Emergency Honduras Protest

Several people were shot to death at the Tegucigalpa airport, on Sunday, July 5, as they gathered to welcome the plane carrying President Manuel Zelaya, who was overthrown in a coup one week ago by the oligarchy-controlled military. There has been worldwide condemnation of the coup. The U.S. government has given at least tacist approval of the coup, by maintaining its military base open, and military aid to the coup regime.

A reported 500,000 people had marched to the airport on Sunday, despite the closing of the airport by the coup plotters. The Honduran military fired numerous times upon the peaceful protesters, minutes before Zelaya's plane arrived to the airport's airspace. At least four people were killed, and many wounded.

Zelaya's plane was blocked from landing by military troops blocking the airstrip. It finally landed in Managua, Nicaragua. Presidents Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela have denounced the Honduran coup leaders' attempts to accuse Nicaragua of trying to interfere along the Nicaraguan-Honduran border, as a means of diverting attention from the fascist coup.

As an emergency mobilization, the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition and the FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front) are calling an emergency protest for 5:00 pm, Monday, July 6, at Powell and Market Sts., San Francisco, next to the BART station.

We urge all organizations to join in this brutal attack on the Honduran people, for the right of President Zelaya to return, and to demand an end to all U.S. aid to the Honduran coup regime.
