Marriage Equality and the Struggle for Civil Rights

by Mike Rhodes (editor [at] fresnoalliance.com)
Thousands of marriage equality activists came to Fresno from throughout the state to protest the Supreme Court decision on proposition 8. A15 mile march for civil rights by about 100 marriage equality activists walked in the scorching valley heat from Selma to Fresno started the day. About 3,000 people were waiting for them when they arrived at Fresno City Hall. Organizers of today’s Meet in the Middle rally chose Fresno because of the need to shift public opinion in the Central Valley on the marriage equality issue. Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, won by a wide margin in Fresno and other valley towns.

The excitement just keeps on going. The entire event should have been filmed as a documentary. And that documentary should be played on all major stations over and over until bigots overcome their myopic views.
I knew I could count on Mike Rhodes to have the best photos and excellent coverage. These are historic photos. Thank You!

Look forward to reading/hearing the personal stories.
Great photos mike, i hope you can post more

I watched live streaming on the Meet in the Middle 4 Equality website. I am so glad of the solidarity of all the groups and around the world they can see that Fresno is not just conservates, and there are so many beautiful progressives.

Really incredible speeches and I hope this does jump start more people in the Central Valley to get active and push out the Good Ol'Boys network.

The entire event and the organization leading up to it IS being shot as a documentary, which should be released by next summer. Fresno Reel Pride will be sure to have it for you!
