Right now, the police chief is gay, and they aren't in the practice of rousting bars, (if you can't say anything else). In fact, I like how Chief Fong has been putting the old boys club in their place, recently. You also don't want haters sitting back chuckling about blindly undirected rage like a bully who causes a victim to spill their lunchtray at school.
I think the problem here is that religion is used to control people, and too much of society isn't questioning it yet. It's sort of weird if you were to compare europe/japan vs. US, the US is more progressive on a lot of issues. Areas of italy, greece, poland, etc can feel dramatically more sexist for women walking down the street. This probably results from feminists in the US doing a good job in changing the climate here. Yet, the US has had large fundamentalist immigration from europe, latin america etc., so less than half the public believes in evolution (which even the pope accepts) while this is rare in other countries. We should fight back intelligently.
