Fresno Homeless Czar Speaks Out

by Mike Rhodes (editor [at] fresnoalliance.com)
Gregory Barfield, the City of Fresno Homeless Prevention Manager (AKA the Homeless Czar), granted me an in-depth interview today. We discussed why the city is leaving money for the homeless unspent, year after year, in their budget, the concept of “Safe Ground” (a campground where the homeless could safely and legally live), and when the city is going to start providing housing vouchers for the homeless. 51:36 minute audio.

Gregory Barfield (center) is talking to Bill Simon (left) and Georgia Williams (right). Bill and Georgia are with the Fresno chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Behind them is a “clean up” crew from the City of Fresno Sanitation Department. They are in a homeless encampment on G street in downtown Fresno called The Hill.

I was curious to whatever has come out of that awful and graphic video of the Fresno police officer punching the homeless man in the face. Has he been repramanded? Is there an investigation? What is going on? The story has just seemed to have died. Anyone have any insight?

Funny you should ask. I actually met with Glen Beaty, the guy beaten by the police, today at the Fresno County Jail. There will be more to tell at a later date, but lets just say for now, that this story is far from over. Glen has a hearing next Monday at 8 AM in Superior Court. I will probably be able to release more information about what really happened to Glen, after that hearing.

Glad to hear somebody interview Greg who has enough street knowledge of what's going on to put him on the spot. I guess the hope is that the points made in this interview will "trickle up."
