"Open Eyes, Queer Film Night" takes place the first Friday of each month at the Femina Potens Art Gallery and hosts popcorn, cold beer, and discussion by film makers. This May showcases two thought-provoking student films that expose, document, and challenge the nuances of gender construction and perception. Ann Von Hageman's documentary, Michelle's First Wedding in a Dress, takes a look at one facet of the transsexual experience, following Michelle Hoffman as she prepares to get married for the second time -this time in a dress. For filmmaker Joie, art and social consciousness go hand in hand. Joie's film, Gender?, seeks to challenge and debunk the gender binary by interviewing folks from the Mid-West, West Coast, and Canada. The film's rough languid style, which employs non-linear narrative, collage, and animation, echoes the loose and fluid experiences of gender identity. Get here early to grab a front row seat.
