Mountaintop removal coal mining has been destroying the mountains and headwater streams of Appalachia for decades. The fight against it has escalated in recent months as mining giant Massey Energy has begun destroying Coal River Mountain, the site of a proposed wind farm.
Groups like Mountain Justice, Climate Ground Zero and Coal River Mountain Watch have mobilized to stop the destruction through legal, regulatory and political channels. Now the struggle has seen several direct actions on the mountain with many more to come.
A base camp will begin in May and go through the summer staging actions to save Coal River Mountain. Your help and support is needed.
Filmmaker Jordan Freeman from Mountain Justice will be in the Bay Area discussing the ongoing campaign to save Coal River Mountain.
*You will see segments of the upcoming film 'coal country', as well as clips from recent actions to resist surface mining.
*You will learn about a campaign to save Coal River Mountain from Massey Energy's blasting by replacing the surface mine with a wind farm.
*You'll learn about a a summer of resistance to surface mining, and why the time is now to shut them down.
Hopefully, you'll come away with a fighting spirit to resist one of the greatest environmental atrocities of our time.
