Contemporary Africa: Challenges, AFRICOM, and the Obama Presidency
Walter Turner will explore the battle for the resources of Africa and the strategic interests of the United States, Asia, and Europe on the African continent. The global “war on terror” and changing terms of trade relations have challenged equitable social development in Africa. The establishment of a new US military command structure for Africa-AFRICOM-has been resisted by almost every Africa country and its peoples. President Obama will face challenges from the recent history of Africa if there is the possibility of changing US policy to meet the needs of contemporary Africa.
Walter Turner is a Professor of Social Sciences and Contemporary African Affairs at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California. He is the President of the Board of Directors of Global Exchange. He is the host and producer of the weekly Pacifica radio Program "Africa Today" which is aired on KPFA Radio in Berkeley, California.
