WHAT: ISR Magazine Discussion--"US Economic Crisis: Causes & Solutions"
WHERE: 110 Capp St. (in SF, between 16th and 17th St. on Capp near 16th St. BART)
WHEN: Wednesday, April 8 at 7pm
The economic crisis continues to worsen, despite projections from the Obama administration and mainstream economists that the worst is behind us. Each stimulus package from Congress seems to do very little to stem the tide. It is more important now than ever to understand and have an analysis of the economics of capitalism, why it continues to fail us, but reward executives; why even in the midst of the last economic recovery, regular working people were worse off than 30 years before.
Fred Moseley, a Marxist economist at Mount Holyoke College, offers in his ISR article, a lucid analysis of the origins of the current economic crisis in the United States. “The situation suggests,” writes Moseley, “that the capitalist financial system, left on its own, is inherently unstable, and can only ‘avoid’ crises by being bailed out by the government, at the taxpayers’ expense. There is a double indictment here: the capitalist financial system is inherently unstable and the necessary bailouts are economically unjust.”
In order to begin to change the way the system works, we need to also be a part of dicussions that help us clarify just what is wrong in order to help craft a plan for action. We invite you to be a part of this discussion. Find the article here, online:
