STATEWIDE FORCES GATHER IN THE MIDDLE OF CA TO RALLY
FOR FEDERAL LGBT RIGHTS
Fresno, CA. – A rally for national LGBT equality will be held the first Saturday AFTER the California Supreme Court issues its rulings on the Proposition 8 cases. The campaign has been designated as “Meet in the Middle for Equality” and will begin with a symbolic march from Selma, CA to the steps of City Hall in downtown Fresno.
WHO: Robin McGehee, Fresno activist and lead organizer for the event along with a coalition of more than 50 organizations representing faith, labor and progressive movements including California Faith for Equality, Courage Campaign, Equal Roots, Equality Action Now, Equality California, Gay Straight Alliance Network, Honor PAC, Jordan Rustin Coalition, Marriage Equality Now, One Struggle One Fight, San Diego Equality Coalition, SF Pride, Unite Here and other
WHAT: A rally to galvanize support and action for LGBT rights
WHEN: First Saturday following the issuance of the Supreme Court rulings on challenges to Prop 8. Selma march begins at 8am and Fresno rally at 1pm.
WHERE: March begins in Selma, CA on N. Golden State between Floral and Highland and will continue along a 14-mile route to Fresno’s City Hall, located at 2600 Fresno Street
WHY: Why Fresno? The struggle for full equality has to be won in towns like Fresno, CA — not just in LGBT-friendly metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles. California's Central Valley population is more representative of "middle-America" attitudes that “ballot-bash” against LGBT and other equality issues.
NOTE: ALL MEDIA MUST PRESENT GOVERNMENT-ISSUED PHOTO ID (such as driver’s license) as well as VALID MEDIA CREDENTIALS.
Media will be provided with photo opportunity beginning at start of the march from Selma. Media check-in for the Rally will be located at the south lot of Fresno City Hall (accessible from Tulare Street) beginning at 12 pm. Bloggers will be provided an area to set-up and access free wi-fi at the Rally. Press inquiries regarding logistics should be directed to event organizers at (559) 240-1418.
