Vigil and Rally for Lavelle Mixon and Family

by Mireille
Vigil and Rally for Lavelle Mixon and Family
Wednesday, March 25
6:00 - 8:00pm
7911 Macarthur Blvd. (at 79th), Oakland
Don't let the police and corporate media continue to depict Lavelle as subhuman.

If the police and white bourgeoisie were serious about "healing the community" they would include Mixon in there pleas, not just recite the names of the police officers.

The media has been reporting all kinds of unconfirmed allegations about Lavelle--details the public is in no position to prove or disprove--relying solely on police reports. The corporate media has not corroborated police reports before disseminating them. The media needs to also report on the police officers' histories, specifically on how many officer-involved shootings they were a part of.

For example, we know already that Sergeant Pat Gonzales, the fifth police officer shot but not seriously injured by Mixon, fired and killed Gary King Jr. (age 20), Joshua Russell (age 19), and made a quadriplegic of Ameir Rollins (age 17). How many officer-involved shootings had the now deceased officers been engaged in? Importantly, all of the officers resided in Bay Area suburbs, not in Oakland. Why has this important context that would shed light on not only the Mixon situation, but the broader tensions with OPD, not been reported?

searching for more about that rally, it looks like it's mentioned on craigslist rants&raves section (an awkward forum for expression) and Uhuru house.
I wish that this could be centered around the very large problem of joblessness and rejection of ex-prisoners by society, which harms many communities. Answering letters from prisoners at a volunteer organization, a large fraction were requesting books to improve their lives and gain skills. But outside, it is very difficult for teens, immigrants, people with poor schools to get a service industry job. Prisoners rank behind all these groups in landing jobs. I think, for the purpose of keeping crime down, there should be the option of a 'state' job such as in the California conservation corps or fire suppression etc that any long-term unemployed person should be eligible for.
Our economy manufactures a permanent unemployment rate in order to keep wages stable (you will hear the Federal Reserve talking about the economy 'overheating'). But if the same people are in that unemployed group continuously, you will produce crime, and consequently more crime victims.

first of all, it's LOvelle, not LAvelle, it's all over the news, pay attention....there is no accountability in Oakland, aswell as no parenting for the most part. Sure, there are some good ones here, but for the most part, "gangsta life" is glorified by these guys. It's not a good thing to carry a gun, what do you think will happen, you'll either shoot someone or get shot, either way it's a loss. Try carrying self respect, a smile, pride, respect for life. These things are non-existant in the streets of Oak. Also, get self educated, stop dropping out of school, raise you kids, be a father so your son dosent kill cops and rape kids. I'm not saying that Mixon deserved to die, but he should have not been out on the streets. To rally for this kid is an example of what is wrong with oakland. Break the cycle, what has to happen for the people of oak to make a drastic change in the way of life that they are so wuick to but the blame on eveyone but the man in the mirror. The buck always stop with the individual, you can call the cops racist, you can say that "the man" is keeping you down, THEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Don't hang out on the front porch smoking blunts and downing St.Ides. Grab a book, teach yourself something that will rise you up and out then teach that to others. You're waiting for a magic wand that only exist within. You have to take the action to unleash this inner power if you want change. Stop being a N*$$@#, and I wont be White Trash.
by Tired of it!
Maybe instead of putting all the blame on the OPD and the parole system. Why don't we look at where the blame should rest. Mr. Mixon was sent to prison at the age of 18, so where was his parents during his upbringing. This has become a real problem in our society today! Nobody wants to take responsibility for their own shortcomings as parents and figures it's always someone else’s fault that the child grew up to be a threat to society! Take responsibility for your actions and raise your kids with some discipline, don't let them run freely with no rules or boundaries and you'll find that most of the time, they turn out ok.

Great suggestions "." Thank you for pointing out the structural problems that create and perpetuate the lumpen.

Amen! Everyone wants to point the finger in the other direction. Folk need to look in the mirror and work on the peron who's reflection they see.

the guy who said he wont act white if you dont act like black.his mental millness is that he will always decide when youre acting black.even if you sneeze at the wrong time.he'll say you deliberately sneezed to insult a white guy! no tears over dead cops

For starters, how about the police actually produce the DNA report rather than it just being a "police said" thing.

Obviously, you believe anything they say as truth. Nevermind that 11 Oakland cops were fired a month ago for lieing in requests for search warrants. Never mind that the head of OPD internal affairs, the very guy in charge of investigating police corruption, was placed on leave a month ago while he is investigated for beating to death someone in his custody.

No, if the cops say it, it's true and there's no verification required.

Why would the officers want to live in Oakland anyway? If I had a choice I would move out of Oakland in a minute, it is not safe to live here anymore. No matter how hard my neighbors and I try some punk with no respect sells his drugs on my street and throws his trash in my yard and 2 months ago shot a hole in my next door neighbor’s wall!! These young people have no respect for anyone, they are only out for themselves. It all starts at home as children - their parents don't raise them right and they have ZERO idea of responsibility for themselves. They think the government, AKA the "MAN", should reward them for doing nothing...I don't think so. Go to school, get a job and keep your nose clean. Don't commit crimes, don't look for ways to make a fast buck. BE A MAN!!! HAVE RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE!!! STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR YOUR PROBLEMS!! If you don't want to be treated like a criminal stop acting like one.

I am a mother, I am raising my children with respect and the Golden Rule. My son gets made fun of by his school piers for having manners and treating his teachers with respect. That is a sad sad thing that someone with respect and decency is the butt of jokes. These children have learned from their parents...and apparently being a THUG is in.

Seriously! The Man shot and KILLED four Cops! Stood over one of them whom was already dead and shot Him in the back of the head? What a Coward! And yet, somehow, people have found a way to Glorify and make a victim of a criminal. Seriously get over the "Race" issue. Why not focus on reforming the training standards for the use of Deadly force??!! Not the legal right of Peace Officers to use said Deadly Force but the way cadets are trained to use it. Find the root of the problem and fix it. I can almost guess Mixon came from a broken home with a single parent who was not involved in his life. Lets work on helping single parents by giving them the tools they need to be successful parents. However that require accountability and integrity on both sides of the equation.
Lets morn the loss of all those who lost their lives that day. But certainly let not glorify A cold blood KILLER.

His name is not Lavelle...It's Lovelle. You might want to get his name right before you call him a hero

Mixon was a child rapist.
Fuck him.

Cops have been bullying most people for years. I feel sorry for these police officers, but they need to clean up their act. This is
coming from a wealthy white guy. Denial goes both ways. Hypocrisy goes both ways. Hopefully all officers will treat everyone
with a little more respect. I know I will get a ton of responses, but if your really honest with yourselves -- This is an aberration of
human nature; Hopefully the public will put things in perspective.

Its really funny how when a cop kills a black person that its alright, it doesnt matter how many times he shoots him (25 times) just as long as he is dead. How many people have they shot thinking that that person might have a gun not knowing for sure what he is really reaching for. I do believe that they are trained to shoot people anywhere that they want so why dont they shoot them in their arms or legs they dont have to shoot to kill. It also seems like the police would like to give any blackman a police record so he can't get a good job, knowing that not many people will give a brother a chance to work if he has been in jail, and if Mr. Mixon did rape this a twelve year old girl why are the police just finding this out, why didn't they didn't run his D&A when it happen, so why run it now, the man is dead. For the lady who talks about raising the children right, when we try to discipline our children, people want to call family services on you because you are spanking your own child and take him out of the home, but when the police are beating your child in the head with his club then its alright because he wasn't raised right.

Back when we were in school young men had classes like woodshop, metal, plastics, mechanics, young women had cooking and sewing class, they were taught skills that could take them through life so they could work with their hands and provide for their families, the young men had baseball leagues that they would play in. We have been setup to fail a long time ago, people are tired of the same old thing we have been treated like we just got here. If we take out a loan they charge us more than what they charge the white people, they send our boys to jail when they call the white persons parents and say we have your son down here at the station, they pull our sons over to profile them or ask them what are you doing in this area. If there are a group of white men standing on the corner the police drive on by but if it is a group of blackmen standing their they are starting a riot, we are just tired of the same old stuff it has gotten old.

So its not that we see him as a hero, he was just feeling what a lot of people are feeling and all though we don't show it the way that he did he got the message across of being tired of the same old stuff.
